This week I decided to go back to using ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil for the life drawing session. It’s a good idea to switch between mediums both to keep drawing interesting and to practice different methods of approaching the subject. When I use pastels, I think in a rather painterly fashion, using color and broad strokes. With drawing styli (pen or pencil) I think more of line and texture (hatching). The timings of the poses are in the captions below each drawing.

I tried to vary my drawing tools and brought some Conté crayons to this week’s session. I did the first two five-minute poses with them but was not happy with the results so I went back to using the ballpoint pen for the remaining poses. They were all drawn in an 11″ x 14″ sketchbook. The model was wearing a mask due to the pandemic. The timings of the poses are in the captions below each drawing.

This week I continued to use ballpoint pen for the life drawing session. To make things a little more interesting and to add color, I brought my watercolors along. Watercolor washes were added over a couple of the pen drawings. It was fun to try something different. I’ve included separate detail images of the drawings that were done two on a page. The timings of the poses are indicated in the captions below each.
